Why do we use an avalanche transceiver?
When snowshoeing, we travel on unsecured routes. Unlike ski slopes, snowshoe trails – even marked ones – are largely unprotected against avalanches. Marked routes are generally positioned in such a way as to minimise risk. Depending on the conditions on the day and the route, it may or may not be necessary to carry avalanche rescue equipment.
This is why carrying an avalanche transceiver, along with a probe and a shovel, is generally mandatory for every participant. This equipment constitutes basic emergency equipment.
Rest assured: as a mountain leader, I select routes with the utmost care. I analyse the weather reports and avalanche bulletins every day to select the safest routes. Safety is my absolute priority.
The avalanche transceiver is therefore not a sign of imminent danger, but a precautionary measure that allows us to travel in snowy terrain. It’s like wearing a helmet when cycling.
