On the agenda: wild trails far from the hustle and bustle, a route that fills your day, an outing that is good for the body and mind, and that incomparable feeling of making your own way through the fresh snow. These hikes are partly part of the «les sentiers francophones» theme.
Why do we use an avalanche transceiver?
When snowshoeing, we travel on unsecured routes. Unlike ski slopes, snowshoe trails – even marked ones – are largely unprotected against avalanches. Marked routes are generally positioned in such a way as to minimise risk. Unmarked routes are rated (WT1-WT6) based on the terrain; avalanche rescue equipment is not required for the first level (WT1). Consequently, depending on the route and conditions on the day, it may or may not be necessary to carry avalanche rescue equipment. The basic emergency equipment consists of an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel.
Rest assured: as a mountain leader, I select routes with the utmost care. I analyse the weather reports and avalanche bulletins every day to select the safest routes. Safety is my absolute priority.
The avalanche transceiver is therefore not a sign of imminent danger, but a precautionary measure that allows us to travel in snowy terrain. It’s like wearing a helmet when cycling.
