Hut and snowshoes at Hohgant – 6-7 February 2027

Winter is here, and so is the snow. Treat yourself to a nature break in the Hohgant region, in the Emmental, Switzerland. Put on your snowshoes and join me for two days of hiking in this preserved mountain range.

Guided along a carefully chosen itinerary, away from the beaten track, take the time to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the snow.

Keep your eyes open: footprints in the snow reveal the discreet presence of local wildlife. Can you guess which animal passed by here?

And after the effort, the comfort: the night will be spent at the Hohganthütte, an authentic mountain hut where the wood-burning stove crackles. The evening meal and breakfast are prepared together, with everyone carrying their share in their rucksack. Fancy suggesting and cooking a dish? The hut spirit is also about that.

Two days of wonder, rejuvenation, and discovery.

Day 1: Heading to the hut. Arrivée à Kemmeriboden par ses propres moyens, rendez-vous à 10:00. Food will be distributed into rucksacks, then we will head towards the hut. Along the way, we will take a break to learn or refresh our skills in using an avalanche transceiver, and we will keep an eye out for animal tracks. Arrival at the hut late in the afternoon: time to put down our things and discover the place, we will prepare supper together with the food carried, for a lovely group evening. Overnight in a dormitory. Approximately 6 km and 800 m of positive elevation gain.

Day 2: The grand return loop. Breakfast prepared together, then departure for this second day which will bring us back to our starting point from the day before, taking a wider route that will reveal another facet of the region. Approximately 10 km and 800 m of negative elevation gain.

Why do we use an avalanche transceiver?

When snowshoeing, we travel on unsecured routes. Unlike ski slopes, snowshoe trails – even marked ones – are mostly not secured against avalanches. Marked trails are generally chosen to minimise this risk. Unmarked routes, however, are classified according to a rating (WT1 to WT6) based on the terrain; rescue equipment in case of an avalanche is not necessary for the first level (WT1). Depending on the chosen route, it will therefore be necessary – or not – to bring this equipment, which consists of an avalanche transceiver, a probe, and a shovel.

Let me reassure you: as a Mountain leader, I select my routes with the utmost care. I analyse weather reports and the avalanche bulletin daily to choose the safest paths. Safety remains my absolute priority. Safety remains my absolute priority.

The avalanche transceiver is therefore not a sign of imminent danger, but a precautionary measure that allows us to evolve on snowy terrain – much like a helmet when cycling.
